Lorry parking operators across the UK are being encouraged to apply for a new round of funding aimed at enhancing facilities for HGV drivers. National Highways has reopened applications for its Lorry Park Improvement Scheme, which provides financial support for projects designed to increase parking capacity, strengthen site security and improve driver welfare amenities.
First introduced in 2023, the initiative helps operators invest in upgrades such as additional parking spaces, CCTV systems, fencing, showers, toilets and other facilities intended to improve conditions for drivers while on the road. Under the latest funding round, successful applicants can receive grants covering up to 50% of eligible capital costs.
The scheme is open to both new applicants and operators who have previously received funding and are seeking support for further development projects. National Highways said it has already allocated more than £15 million through its Designated Funds programme, with industry contributions matching that investment. Combined with support from the Department for Transport, the initiative has helped unlock almost £69 million for projects focused on driver welfare and site security.
According to National Highways, the funding programme has so far contributed to the creation of more than 500 additional HGV parking spaces and improvements at approximately 130 locations nationwide. Completed projects have included upgraded surveillance systems, enhanced perimeter security and modernised washing and restroom facilities.
National Highways chief customer and strategy officer Elliot Shaw highlighted the importance of professional drivers to the UK's supply chain. “By improving features like security and opening up more parking spaces, we’re helping to ensure drivers feel well rested and safe on our roads.”
Industry bodies have also welcomed the continued investment, pointing to the ongoing need for better facilities across the sector. Logistics UK chief executive Ben Fletcher said, “With many drivers still forced to take their legally mandated rest in unsafe locations, without access to running water or a cooked meal, it is imperative that improvements are delivered at pace.”
Despite recent progress, industry representatives argue that a significant shortfall in secure parking capacity remains. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimates that the UK is currently lacking around 11,000 secure HGV parking spaces.
The latest funding round forms part of wider efforts to address long-standing concerns around driver welfare, security and the availability of suitable overnight parking facilities for HGV operators across the UK.
