Handymen Enjoy The Lowest Insurance Premiums

Did you know handymen enjoy the lowest van insurance premiums in the UK? Their premiums average just £382 annually, according to new data from Go.Compare.

In stark contrast, courier drivers pay the most, with an average annual premium of £1,689 — over four times higher. The data suggests insurers perceive couriers as higher risk due to tight delivery schedules, long distances, and valuable cargo. Professions such as decorators, gardeners, and carpenters also benefit from lower premiums, largely due to their more localised travel patterns.

“These figures show just how much your job can influence the cost of your van insurance,” said Tom Banks, Go.Compare’s motoring expert. “Drivers who stay local, cover fewer miles, or carry low-value equipment are generally seen as lower risk.”

When grouped by sector, decorating emerged as the cheapest business type for van insurance, followed by builders, cleaners, carpenters, and pet service workers, who all had median premiums below £500.
